An IUD (intrauterine device) is a tiny, T-shaped contraceptive implant that a doctor puts in your uterus. It is inserted through the vagina. IUDs are meant to stay in your body for years, and are supposed to stop you from getting pregnant. There are two types: hormonal IUDs (like Mirena) that work by releasing hormones, and copper IUDs (like ParaGard) that either make it hard for sperm to reach the egg, or make your uterus toxic to eggs and sperm, when there is an IUD in place.^{1, 2}

Truthfully, no form of birth control is 100% effective.³ It is still possible to get pregnant with an IUD.¹ The only way to totally be in control of your future and your health is to delay sex for now. But are there other risks to an IUD?

The Risks You Need To Know

IUD birth control comes with a number of risks. It’s important to understand these risks, so you can be informed and fully consent before the procedure. Some of the risks include:

1. Perforated Uterus or Uterine Embedment: When the doctor inserts the IUD, it’s possible for it to poke through the wall of your uterus. . It can also embed in wall of the uterus when it’s not supposed to.⁴

2. Expulsion of the IUD: Sometimes, your body’s like, “Nah, I’m good,” and the IUD can slip out of place or fall out completely. If this happens, the device can damage your other organs.⁴

3. Severe Menstrual Pain and Heavy Bleeding: If you’ve got a copper IUD, your periods might change. You might have longer periods with heavier bleeding, with spotting in between. Or, it’s possible that you could miss a period. That might make it challenging to know whether it’s pregnancy or a IUD side effect..⁴

4. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): There’s a risk of getting an infection in your reproductive organs. If not treated, this infection can cause scarring, problems getting pregnant when you want to, and even be life threatening.⁴

5. Severe Infection: IUDs can put you at risk for a serious infection called sepsis. This is a life-threatening condition that needs immediate medical attention.4

6. Risk of Ectopic Pregnancy: If you do get pregnant with an IUD, there’s a higher chance it could be ectopic (meaning the pregnancy happens outside the uterus, often in the fallopian tube). 7. No STD Protection: Just a reminder that while IUDs won’t prevent pregnancy 100%, IUDs won’t protect you from STDs either (sexually transmitted diseases, also called STIs). – Missed Period: If your period’s a no-show and that’s not normal for you, it could be a sign.

– Breast Tenderness: If your breasts are feeling more tender than usual, that could be a clue.

– Light Spotting: This can be one of the first signs of pregnancy. It’s called “implantation bleeding,” and happens around the time when you’re expecting your period.

– Nausea: Feeling queasy? Morning sickness can sneak up on you, so don’t ignore it. It can actually come at any time of the day.

– Cramping: Some cramping is normal, but if it feels different, it might be time to check.⁵
