How to prevent a uti: self-care ideas.

So, What’s the Tea on UTIs?

A UTI, or urinary tract infection, is basically how your urinary system says, “Hey, something’s up.” It’s caused by bacteria that enter the urinary tract (your kidneys, bladder and urethra) and cause chaos.1 Maybe it’s not a party you want to attend, but it’s very common, and nothing to be ashamed of. You deserve to know the facts so you can get the treatment you need (often an antibiotic). Let’s talk about how to deal with (and help prevent!) a UTI and get your glow back.

Symptoms? Think frequent urination (like, your bladder is on a first-name basis with your toilet), burning when you urinate, and some low-key abdominal discomfort.1 It’s like the ultimate unwanted guests (bacteria that enter the urethra), don’t get the hint — and need an antibiotic to serve an eviction notice! It’s important to get your UTI treated to prevent a kidney infection.

Frequent urination can also be a pregnancy symptom.2 Have you missed a period? If you have, you’re welcome to come take a no-cost pregnancy test at ThriVe. While we don’t offer UTI tests, we DO offer pregnancy tests to help you get the answers you need.

How to Keep the UTI Drama Away

UTI prevention is key, babes. Think about your health as self-care. You deserve great health. You have goals for your future. Make sure you’re getting the treatment you need so you can get on with those goals. Women are at a higher risk of UTIs, because we have a shorter urethra than guys. That makes it easier for bacteria to enter our urinary tracts. Wondering how to prevent a UTI? Here’s how to keep your urinary tract chill and prevent UTIs:

Stay hydrated: Water is your BFF, so drink plenty! When you empty your bladder, it helps flush the bad stuff out of your bladder and urethral area before it can cause trouble.

Wipe front to back after a bowel movement: No backtracking here, we’re keeping the genital area clean and simple.1

Postpone sex for now: Sex can introduce bacteria into the urethra. Certain birth controls like condoms, spermicide, and diaphragms might encourage bacterial growth.1

Avoid douching: Your body’s got this. No need to mess with the natural balance in your vaginal area. Your vagina is actually capable of cleaning itself. Isn’t that cool?3

Use gentle products: Your skin deserves the best, so keep it kind and gentle. Avoid deodorant sprays, powders, and scented feminine products that can irritate your urethra.1

Wear breathable cotton undies: Let your skin breathe, girl. Tight, non-breathable fabrics? Not the vibe. Make sure your underwear is comfortable and the right size for you.3

Extra Credit: Cranberry Juice

Some say cranberry  (either in juice or pill form)  is like a natural defense squad for your urinary tract. 4,  If you get recurrent UTIs, talk with your doctor about natural ways to keep these infections away.

UTI vs. Pregnancy Symptoms: What’s the Difference?

Now, here’s where things might get tricky. UTI symptoms and early pregnancy signs can feel kinda similar — you know, with all those frequent trips to the bathroom. But here’s the thing: if you’re dealing with a UTI, you’ll probably notice the discomfort and that pesky burning feeling or strong-smelling urine when you pee.1 Pregnancy, on the other hand, might bring on some nausea, tiredness, and definitely a missed period. And by the way, UTIs are actually pretty common during pregnancy,2, 5 so if you’re unsure, it’s best to get checked out.
