How to get an accurate home pregnancy test

When can I take a pregnancy test? I know waiting for results from a home pregnancy test (HPT) can be really stressful. At ThriVe, we’re all about women supporting women. We’ve been there. Truly.  Whether the test turns out positive or negative, and whatever decision you make, I’ll support you with medically-accurate information every step of the way. Our whole team will be in your corner.

Lots of people wonder about the accuracy of taking a pregnancy test at home. It’s a totally normal concern! You want answers, and you don’t want to stress out. Getting an accurate result is super important for your mental health and for your ability to make informed choices. After all, it’s your future and your body. And you’re totally capable of taking charge of your health. Even now! We believe in you.

What you can do to get an accurate result

Wondering when can I take a pregnancy test? To get the most accurate results, try these:

1. Best Time to Test: The best time to take a home pregnancy test is after you’ve had a missed period. This is when the hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) hormone, which indicates pregnancy, is most likely to be detectable.

2. First Morning Urine: Use your first urine of the morning for the test. It’s usually the most concentrated and has the highest levels of hCG.

3. Follow Instructions Closely: Carefully read and follow the instructions that come with the test. Different brands may have slightly different procedures, so it’s important to get it right. At ThriVe, we can help you with this! We can perform our own lab-quality pregnancy for you,  to give you more confidence.

Got a negative?

Did you take a pregnancy test and get a negative? There could be an explanation. What could it be?

– Testing Too Early: If you test too early, there might not be enough hCG in your urine yet to be detected.1

– Not Following Test Directions: If you take the test incorrectly, it can affect the results.1 Make sure you follow the instructions on the box precisely. If you’re worried about this, you can take a test at no-cost at ThriVe.

– Diluted Urine: Your urine is the most concentrated first thing after you wake up. If you take a pregnancy test later in the day, the hCG levels in your urine might be harder to detect.1

– Later Ovulation: If you ovulated later than you thought, it could delay the rise in hCG levels. Our bodies are all different. Some of us ovulate like clockwork. Others are not as regular.1

Thinking about retesting?

If you test too early and get a negative test result, it’s a good idea to wait a few days before testing again. hCG levels double approximately every 48-72 hours in early pregnancy, so waiting a few days can make a big difference in the accuracy of your result.1 ThriVe offers lab-quality pregnancy tests, so they’re super accurate. If you’ve had a missed period, you’re welcome to make a no-cost appointment to get answers.

Hold on a sec

Need to wait a few days before testing? I know that can be REALLY hard. When you’re facing something so big, waiting a few days can feel like forever. If you aren’t proactive about it, it might make a few days feel like a few years! When can I take an HPT? Well, it’s best to wait until you can get the most accurate results. So in the meantime, try to:

– Stay Busy: Do some activities you like to keep your mind occupied. This could be reading, watching a favorite movie, or picking up a hobby.

Exercise: Light exercise, like a walk or yoga, can really reduce stress and improve your mood.

– Pamper Yourself: Take a relaxing bath, get a massage, or spend time doing something you find soothing.

– Talk to Friends: Sometimes just talking about how you’re feeling can help relieve some of the anxiety. When you come to your appointment at ThriVe, our women’s advocates can be really encouraging to talk with. We understand that this can be stressful. You’re not alone.

– Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices can help you stay calm and centered. Try focusing on your breathing. Count to 100 in your head. Jot down some of your thoughts.

Want a more definitive answer? Is the waiting just too stressful? You can get a lab-quality pregnancy test at no cost by contacting ThriVe. We can get you an accurate pregnancy test result and support throughout all of this. You deserve it.

You’ve got what it takes

Have you had a positive result? I want you to know that no matter what decision you make regarding your pregnancy, you have my full support. You deserve to feel confident and informed about your choices. Whether that’s abortion, adoption, or parenting, we will be there for you. Here’s some advice to help you through this:

Get informed

1. Educate Yourself: A positive result can be hard to take in. Learn as much as you can about all your options. Knowledge is empowering! It can help you make the best decision for yourself. You’re the best qualified person to make this choice. At your appointment, we can go over all of your options in detail. We’ll answer your questions so you feel better equipped.

Abortion: Understand the different types of abortion, the procedures involved, and the potential emotional and physical risks and side effects.

Adoption: Look into different types of adoption, the legal process, and how it might impact you and your baby.

Parenting: Consider the responsibilities, challenges, and joys of raising a child, as well as the support systems you’ll need.

2. Early Check-Up: Part of your ThriVe screening includes an ultrasound. Why? It’ll help you understand the viability and age of the pregnancy. This is super important. It can provide crucial info about your options and any potential health concerns. You need to do this before you make a decision about your pregnancy, even if you’re considering abortion. Your health is worth it.

3. Consult Trusted Sources: Talk to healthcare providers (no-cost at ThriVe), advocates, and support organizations to get medically-accurate information. We’ll never judge or pressure you. Take our support quiz to see how you might like to be supported right now.

Confident, beautiful, capable

You’re the only one who can make this choice. It’s your pregnancy. It’s your future. Whatever you choose, you will be the one most impacted by it. To feel as confident as possible:

1. Reflect on Your Values and Priorities: Think about what’s most important to you. How will each option align with your values and life goals?

2. Seek Support: Talk to friends, family, or an advocate. Sometimes, discussing your feelings and concerns can help clarify your thoughts.

3. Take Your Time: Don’t rush your decision. Give yourself the time and space you need to make the choice that feels right for you. You’re worth it. Don’t let anyone pressure you.
